Biography
Dr. John L. Bixby received his PhD from Caltech in 1980, and did postdoctoral work at the University of California, San Diego, and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He joined the faculty at UCSF in 1985 and moved to the University of Miami in 1988. He is Professor of Molecular & Cellular Pharmacology and Neurological Surgery at the Miller School of Medicine and the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. He was Sr. Associate Dean for Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies at the School of Medicine from 2006-2012, and was Vice Provost for Research of the University of Miami from 2012-2020. His research interests are in axon growth and regeneration, kinase and phosphatase signaling, neuronal gene expression and epigenetics, and high throughput analysis of neuronal morphology for CNS drug development. In addition to NIH U01 and T32 grants, Dr. Bixby has received uninterrupted support as an NIH R01 PI since 1990, as well as multiple grants from the NSF, the State of Florida, and various research foundations. His 130+ journal publications include multiple articles in top-ranked journals such as Science, Nature, and Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci (USA). He has extensive experience reviewing grant proposals for the NIH (24 distinct study sections), the NSF (2 different review panels), and other organizations, including the Swiss National Science Foundation, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Wings for Life, Craig Nielsen Foundation, and the Wellcome Trust. -

Teaching Interests
Dr. Bixby taught medical students and PhD students for 25 years (1988-2012), and taught Developmental Biology and Developmental Neurobiology to undergraduates (juniors and seniors) from 2004-2011. IHe has considerable experience with lecturing, small group teaching, and “tutorial” teaching of MD/PhD students. With one colleague, he co-founded and co-directed a seminar course for PhD students directed at translational research, which involved both clinical and basic science faculty (from 1995-1998). With a different colleague, he co-founded and co-directed two professional development courses (each 2 full-day sessions) for junior PhD students and for senior PhD students and postdoctoral fellows (from 2002-2012). He has supervised 20 PhD or MD/PhD students and 20 postdoctoral fellows. -
Research Interests
Research Program: Axonal regeneration after nervous system injury. For the past 19 years our lab has focused on mechanisms underlying the restoration of function after injury to the central nervous system (CNS), and on data standards and ontologies in regeneration research. Recent work has emphasized, in addition to high content screening and bioinformatics/machine learning, in vivo approaches to regeneration mechanisms involving both optic nerve injury models and three different rodent models of spinal cord injury. Our lab has also worked on RNA-Seq analysis and various bioinformatic approaches to screening and regeneration-related data. Our current most important project is in drug development using multi-kinase inhibitors to promote CNS regeneration -
