Biography
Laurence B. Gardner, M.D., MACP
Biographical Sketch
Laurence (“Lanny”) Gardner was born in New York and attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Humanities and Science and minors in mathematics, biology and physics. He graduated from the Harvard Medical School, magna cum laud and spent two years of medical residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
He trained in Nephrology and served as Chief Medical Resident at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. From 1972 to 1974 he served as Major in the United States Army Medical Corps, stationed at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington, where he was Chief of the Nephrology Service.
He joined the faculty of the University of Miami on July 1, 1974 and was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine and Chief of the Division of General Medicine. He held this latter position until his appointment as Interim Chairman of the Department of Medicine on July 1, 1994. On October 20, 1997 he was appointed Chairman of the Department of Medicine. He has served in the Department of Medicine at various times as Director of Clinical Programs and then subsequently as Vice Chairman of the Department. He serves as the Miller Professor of Medicine and served as Executive Dean for Education and Policy. In addition, he was the interim Dean of the Miller School of Medicine from June 1, 2016 to July 1, 2017. On June 1. 2020, he was appointed Senior Advisor to the Dean of the Miller School of Medicine.
Dr. Gardner has published numerous articles, book chapters and books dealing with a variety of subjects in Internal Medicine. His particular interests include acid-base physiology and clinical disorders of electrolyte metabolism, as well as health policy. He is currently studying the role of academic health centers in the development of health policy in the United States. He served as President of the Association of Professors of Medicine, the organization composed of the 126 chairs of Departments of Medicine at U.S. medical schools from 2003 to 2004.
An active member of the National Board of Medical Examiners, Dr. Gardner has participated in a variety of roles for more than 20 years. He was made a Life Member of the National Board in 2011 after completing four year terms as Chair and Past Chair of the Executive Board of the NBME. In 2011, he was inducted as a Master of the American College of Physicians.
Outside medicine, Dr. Gardner and his wife, Behna, enjoy travel, sailing, skiing, scuba diving and their grandchildren. He is a licensed commercial pilot and flight instructor and holds a 100-ton commercial Coast Guard license. -
