Biography
Dr. Kevin Van der Jeught was born and raised in Brussels, Belgium. In 2012 he graduated Magna Cum Laude in Biomedical Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium. He started a PhD in Medical Sciences on the topic « use of mRNA-based adjuvants to stimulate cancer-specific immune responses » at the Laboratory of Molecular and Cellular Therapy under the guidance of Dr. Karine Breckpot and Dr. Kris Thielemans. Part of his work was carried out at the Centre de Biophysique Moléculaire of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Orléans, France under the guidance of Dr. Patrick Midoux. His PhD has been supported by grants from the IWT, the Fund Germaine Eisendrath Dubois of which he was awarded the two-year laureate in 2014 and the Doctoral Schools of Life Sciences and Medicine. The results of his PhD project have been published in multiple peer-reviewed papers, were presented at several occasions both at national and international conferences and was awarded several times, among others by the Belgian Association of Cancer Research.
He moved thereafter to the MD Anderson Cancer Center and joined the laboratory of Dr. Xiongbin Lu in the Cancer Biology department. He started there to work on several cancer biology-related projects. He followed Dr. Xiongbin Lu and worked at the Indiana University in the department of Medical and Molecular Genetics. He has great enthusiasm in improving current cancer immunotherapy treatments and identifying new immunological mechanisms.
His current research projects at the University of Miami involve:
1. Development of novel immune checkpoint inhibitors for cancer immunotherapy
2. Inflammation driven cancer immunotherapy resistance
3. mRNA cancer vaccination -

Teaching Interests
In my opinion science is a circle of life that goes on far beyond someone’s existence. We were able to become scientists and to acquire knowledge because predecessors paved the way for us. They laid the basis of the scientific knowledge we have today. Science is a permanently evolving field and so is the teaching of this discipline. I find it a personal duty to bestow my knowledge and scientific enthusiasm to the next generation of scientists. -
Research Interests
My primary research interest lies in the field of solid tumor cancer immunotherapy and its application in translational research with a focus on:
Development of alternative immune checkpoint inhibitors.
Improvement of current immune checkpoint therapies.
Generation of antigen-specific dendritic-cell based vaccination strategies.
Discovery of nanoparticle-based cancer immunotherapy applications.
