About

Risto Hilpinen (Ph.D., University of Helsinki), Professor and former Cooper Fellow; until 1999 Professor of Theoretical Philosophy, University of Turku, Finland. He has held visiting professorships at the University of Rochester, Stanford University, Florida State University, and the University of Graz, and research fellowships at Stanford University, the University of Queensland, Harvard University, and the University of Pittsburgh. His main areas of interest include semiotics and the philosophy of language, epistemology and philosophy of science, the philosophy of C. S. Peirce, action theory, normative systems, and practical and theoretical reasoning. He is the author of over 100 articles in scholarly journals and books, and has edited several books and journal issues on deontic logic and the philosophy of science, for example, Deontische Logik und Semantik (with Amedeo G. Conte and Georg Henrik von Wright), Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science VIII (with Jens Erik Fenstad and Ivan T. Frolov), and Realism and Anti-Realism in the Philosophy of Science (with Robert S. Cohen and Qiu Renzong). His current research concerns abductive reasoning, history of semiotics, productive action (poiesis), and the concept of interest in ethics. He is a member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters and of Institut International de Philosophie (Paris), former president of the Charles S. Peirce Society, and former Secretary of the International Union of History and Philosophy of Science, Division of Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science (IUHPS/DLMPS).
