Biography
Dr. Roy Weiss is the Chairman of the Department of Medicine and the Kathleen and Stanley Glaser Distinguished Chair in Medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He is also the Rabbi Morris I. Esformes Endowed Professor. As Chairman of the Department of Medicine (DOM) he is responsible for the research and scholarly activity and clinical enterprise of over 350 full time faculty and 850 voluntary faculty with a budget including $210M in revenue and expenses.
Dr. Weiss’ leadership at University of Miami these past 6 years as well as the past 29 years at the University of Chicago has been devoted to providing the latest innovations to health care, discovery science and education. As a physician scientist his career has been devoted to diagnosis and treatment of genetic diseases of the thyroid with the discovery of new genes and mechanisms of thyroid hormone action and disease. He has been director of an NIH funded Clinical Research Center for more than 10 years. As an investigator who has been R01 funded, and supported by a K-24 to mentor junior physician scientists he has also mentored Ph.D. students as well as fellows and housestaff. He is the PI of a U54 on Personalized Medicine in Health Disparities.
Dr. Weiss is the immediate past President of the Central Society for Translational and Clinical Research and co-edited the only textbook, now in its second edition on the genetic basis of endocrine disease, 2nd Edition Genetic Diagnosis of Endocrine Diseases. He has published over 175 papers. He is a fellow in the American College of Physicians, The American College of Endocrinology and the American Academy of Pediatrics. -
