Sheryl Alonso is a lecturer in the Miami Herbert Business School. Alonso teaches at the undergraduate and graduate level and in executive education. Alonso began her career as a nurse, earning a BSN from Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois and later an MBA from the University of Miami. In 2010, she completed a PhD in Medical Leadership at the University of Miami. The interdisciplinary program integrated the Miami Herbert Business School curriculum with that of the University’s Miller School of Medicine and College of Arts and Sciences. Her research passions lie in the areas of leadership and health care policy and administration.

Alonso draws on extensive experience at the executive level, having served as a hospital vice president for many years at Mercy Hospital in Miami prior to teaching in the Miami Herbert Business School. She was responsible for more than 800 employees; developing and implementing strategic and short initiatives for all reporting departments. Alonso fostered relations and developed contracts for health care providers. She was instrumental in developing and coordinating relationships with local schools for training of students in several health care fields. She also coordinated and mentored Masters in Healthcare Administration student interns. She was responsible for legal compliance in all reporting departments. An active participant in numerous health care organizations, Alonso has been a speaker and organizer of programs and events at the local and national level, and was especially proud to represent hospitals to enact state legislature in infant/child seat belt laws.

Alonso is the academic director of the Johnson A. Edosomwan Leadership Institute in the Miami Herbert Business School. She thoroughly enjoys her research and teaching, and has been the recipient of many awards including the Excellence in Teaching Award for Undergraduate Business Programs, the Research Mentor of the Year Award, the Outstanding Reviewer Award from the Academy of Management, and more. She serves as an undergraduate research mentor and participates in the Leadership Development Series for the Butler Center for Volunteer and Leadership Development. Alonso welcomes the opportunity to advise and guide students in reaching their goals. She is active in a variety of management, civic and not-for-profit organizations and has served on several boards. Currently she is on the Board for Girl Scouts USA, and is a committee member for March of Dimes. Alonso was a speaker for the Center for Not-For-Profit Development, which assists leaders from nonprofit organizations. She has developed and executed many programs for executives and physicians; the Florida Medical Association, Merck, Astra Zeneca, and Johnson and Johnson to name a few.
