Philip M. McCabe
Professor
Chairman, Department of Psychology

I am a Professor of Psychology and Biomedical Engineering, and the Chairman of the Psychology Department at UM. Before I became the Chair, I served as the Director of the interdepartmental Undergraduate Neuroscience Program. I did my undergraduate studies and also received my Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and I came to UM in 1982. My research examines the neurobiology of emotional behavior, and the impact of social-emotional behavior on the development of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer. This research has been funded since 1986 by the NIH and NSF. One of the main focuses of this research program has been the influence of social environment and nervous system mechanisms on the progression of atherosclerosis in animal models of dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, and cardiovascular disease. I have actively collaborated with Drs. Armando Mendez and Ronald Goldberg at the Diabetes Research Institute in the UM Miller School of Medicine (MSM), and Dr. Julia Zaias in the Division of Comparative Pathology and the Division of Veterinary Resources also at the MSM. Within the Psychology Department I collaborate with Drs. Neil Schneiderman, Maria Llabre, and Angela Szeto.
I am a Fellow of the Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research, and was elected President of that organization in 2010. I am a member of the UM university-wide Neuroscience Ph.D. Program, and in 2001 I was one of the co-founders of the Undergraduate Neuroscience Program. The undergraduate program relies heavily upon collaboration from Medical School neuroscience faculty members, who teach and supervise undergraduates in their laboratories. As Chair of the Psychology Department, I am fortunate to work with 50 faculty members, 140 staff, and 87 graduate Ph.D. students, who make the Department one of best units in the university.
